How Benito inspired Pickypaws
Pickypaws began with Benito, my much-loved cat, and a challenge I never expected to face. When he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), I quickly learned that feeding him would become one of the hardest parts of caring for him.
He needed renal cat food to support his health, but what he needed and what he would actually eat were often two very different things. Like many picky cats, Benito would sniff a pouch, turn away, and leave me wondering how I was going to help him get the nutrition he needed.
Living with chronic kidney disease in cats can make everyday feeding feel overwhelming. Cats with CKD often need specialised renal food, but many are sensitive to smell, texture, flavour, and routine, which can make mealtimes stressful for both the cat and the owner.
I found myself constantly trying to balance what was medically recommended with what Benito would actually accept. That emotional gap, between knowing what your cat should eat and seeing them refuse it, can be heartbreaking.
One of the hardest parts of the process was discovering that renal cat food often comes in multipacks or larger quantities. If Benito rejected one flavour or texture, I was left with unopened pouches and tins that he would never eat.
That meant wasted food, wasted money, and a growing sense of frustration at a time when I was already worried about his health. For owners of picky cats with CKD, finding the right cat kidney disease food can feel like expensive guesswork.
I created Pickypaws because I wanted a simpler and more compassionate way to approach renal feeding. Instead of forcing owners to commit to full packs, Pickypaws offers a renal discovery box with single-serve options from trusted brands, making it easier to try different foods first.
The goal is simple: less waste, less stress, and a better chance of finding renal food your cat may actually eat. It is a gentler way for picky cats to explore new options, and for owners to feel more supported through the process.
Pickypaws exists to help owners navigate chronic kidney disease in cats with a little more confidence and a little less overwhelm. Every box is inspired by Benito and created for the people who are doing their best to care for a cat that needs support, patience, and the right food.
We believe finding renal cat food should not feel so discouraging. It should feel more manageable, more thoughtful, and more hopeful.
